What happened to DJ Martin?

On March 29th, 2000 my youngest son Daniel (he preferred to be called DJ) was murdered. He was 24 years old. One of his friends needed to move out of his apartment: his roommate was threatening him with violence. Daniel agreed to help.

That evening, as DJ started moving furniture, the roommate produced a knife and began stabbing my son. Bleeding, DJ ran down the hallway, but failed to escape the killer. He died after having received eight wounds: one in his chest and seven in his back.

"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends"... John 15:13.

Just a few hours earlier, he'd dropped by my office. We laughed, joked, and had a great time. When he was ready to leave, DJ walked behind my desk, gave me a hug, and told me he loved me.

I had no way of knowing this would be our last hug. Speaking for myself, the rest of his family, and his many friends: if you have children, please hug them. Today.
